Gym Etiquette
Monday, August 18th, 2008This is something that is rarely talked about on the internet. How to behave in the gym. I believe because there isn’t much on the subject is why so many people are ignorant to the subject. The other amount of people that do know better is just plain laziness. We are going to go over some mistakes many do in the gym.
If you’re doing multiple sets on a machine, it’s common courtesy to let others work in during your rest periods. This may not always be practical, but offer to share whenever you can. Nobody wants someone who is hogging up a certain machine all day long. Try to understand that others also want to use the machine or bench that you have been on for a half hour already.
My biggest pet peeve is someone who walks away from a machine, leaving a slimy pool of sweat behind. Always bring a towel with you and wipe the machines or benches down when you’re finished. Most gyms offer wipes or sprays strategically located around the gym for this purpose. It is so disgusting to go lay down on a bench and your head is sitting in another person’s sweat.
My next biggest pet peeve is the person who leaves six million pounds on the leg press machine. Always put your weights back when you’re finished. Nobody wants to have to take off 300 different weight plates to get the weight they want instead of just adding just a few plates. I notice the leg press machine gets this treatment the most. Do not leave your weights on the machine, bar, or all over the floor. Put the weights in the appropriate place.
Many gyms have time limits on cardio machines during busy hours. There’s a reason for that, and you should obey it. Many try to cover their display on the treadmill with a towel. This is only making it look like it is time for you to get off the machine even more. It will not kill you to take a break from the treadmill and go pickup a dumbbell and let someone else have a turn.
There is no reason to scream. I know how some like to be jogging away on the treadmill while screaming into a cell phone. I also know the weight trainers that need to yell at the top of their lungs while they are lifting. In most cases, this is because they want everyone to see how much weight they are putting up at the time. You are not impressing anyone, you are being annoying.
I respect the confidence that allows some people to walk around the locker room naked. Know what else I respect? Seeing you wearing a towel after your shower to keep the locker room a comfortable place for everyone. Nothing more awkward than trying to take care of business in the locker room when a naked person you don’t know is trying to carry a conversation with you. Please cover yourself up.
There are many things that go on at the gym that is displeasing. These are the worst ones that should not take place. They take place because people are lazy. Most do know these things probably shouldn’t happen but really don’t care. Some believe they own the gym while they are there. For those of you that just didn’t know any better, I hope this article helps you improve for the sake of everyone around you.
