Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG)

Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate is an arginine molecule bound to an alpha-ketoglutarate molecule. Arginine is an amino acid that is a precursor of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide causes vasodilatation and relaxes smooth muscle tissue. Alpha-ketoglutarate is also called oxo-glutarate and it is an important biological compound. Alpha-ketoglutarate is the keto acid produced by de-amination of glutamate, and is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle. Arginine AKG is a more stable form of arginine than regular L-arginine. Because it is more stable, arginine AKG can raise nitric oxide levels to a greater degree than regular L-arginine.
